First Official Water Practice

Tomorrow is a very exciting day for the club. If you are a returning member or have high school experience, we will be on the water. If you have no previous rowing experience you will be meeting at 2PM in the Field House. The Field House is located across the street from Rogers and Whitetop. The erg chamber is located in Racquetball Court #4. There you will learn proper erging/rowing technique before attempting to get into a boat.

The George Mason University Crew Club will be holding two interest meetings next week for anyone who would like to learn more about the club. These will be held on Monday (08/27) and Tuesday (08/28) at 2pm in Racquetball Court #4 at the Field House. If you have any questions, please direct them at the president of the club Matt (mmckinn4@gmu.edu).

Small Boats Camp

This is just a reminder that small boats camp will be taking place next week from 9-1 starting on Monday 8/20. The camp is open to all experienced returning rowers/coxes, and freshmen with HS experience.

Attention Alumni and Current Rowers

To all current and alumni rowers! Beginning on August 4th, the crew club would like to host "mini regattas" (August 4th, 11th, 18th, and 24th) on the Occoquan! We encourage all current rowers and alumni to join. These events will take place in pairs, fours, and possibly eights! When the time gets closer, the club will be sending out more detailed information.

ACRA Men's Varsity 4+ "A" Final

American Collegiate Rowing Association's National Regatta

George Mason competed in the ACRA national regatta on the weekend of May 26-27th. The regatta had 62 schools represented with over 1500 athletes competing.

Joe Butt finished 3rd in the "B" level final in the single. The final was raced in less than flat conditions. Joe did very well for his first time racing a single.

The Varsity Lightweight 4+ (Evan Coombs, Lindsay Holzer, Will Rose, Brian Hetrick, and Brett Baker) continued their strong racing efforts in the opening heat of their event but just missed qualifying for the "A" final by a fraction of a second [.3]. They came back Saturday afternoon in the rep and spanked the competition qualifying them for the "A" final where they finished 7th in a very competitive field.

The Freshman/Novice 4+ (Cayla Donnelly, Tim Arvin, Max Jones, Adam Sykes, and Chris Margopoulos) turned in a fast time in their opening heat and were targeted by their competition in the final. They placed 4th in the "A" final, only a few seconds behind the MI crew. They showed good poise when things were tight and kept it together.

The Varsity Heavyweight 4+ (Russell Topp, Robert Kress, Gordon Day, Matt McKinney, and Phil Gross) showed good speed and determination in all of their races. They capped it off with a superb racing performance in the "A" final. The boat finished in 3rd place, a few seconds ahead of Penn State, in an extremely competitive event. Their bronze medals were worn with great pride and were well deserved.
